Joint health is one of the most significant health concerns facing Americans today. Sixty-six million Americans currently suffer with joint discomfort and chronic joint symptoms. Most of those who suffer believe that there is little that can be done to help them; however, anti-inflammatory treatments can provide some relief from the painful swelling and stiffness associated with a number of chronic joint problems and transient injuries.

A combination of Chinese Skullcap extract (Scutellaria baicalensis) and Acacia heartwood extract (Acacia catechu), not only "directly inhibits the COX-2 enzyme, but also inhibits the 5-lipoxygenase activity and has demonstrated impacts on gene expression level." (Schmidt and Sampalis 2003) The activation of these two enzymes, COX-2 and 5-lipooxygenase, are both key steps in the process the body uses to create swelling and inflammation. In-vitro studies show that Chinese Skullcap extract and Acacia heartwood extract decrease the activity and expression of these enzymes, thereby stopping and slowing inflammation at its source. Boswellia serrata extract also impedes inflammation and swelling of joint and related discomfort. (Redini et al. 1990) In a study evaluating the effectiveness of Boswellia serrata and Turmeric, patients reported decreased discomfort and increased mobility. (Kulkarni et al. 1991) In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover study, patients with osteoarthritis who received Boswellia reported a decrease in knee discomfort and swelling, increased knee flexion, and increased walking distance. (Kimmatkar et al. 2003) Ginger has been investigated for its ability to reduce swelling and discomfort in inflammatory conditions. (Sharma et al. 1994; Wigler et al. 2003) Bromelain has been used to treat inflammation, including some studies on the benefits of using Bromelain in the management of joint health. (Rovenska et al. 1999; Rovenska et al. 2001; Walker et al. 2002) Furthermore, Bromelain may help reduce the duration and severity of discomfort associated with recovery from injuries and surgery. (Klaue et al. 1979; Tassman et al. 1965)

In addition, select nutrients aid in the maintenance of healthy cells and tissues. Curcuminoids found in Turmeric are antioxidants and serve to limit the damage caused by free radicals. (Reddy et al. 1994; Ruby et al. 1995, Subramainian et al. 1994) Bromelain, from pineapples, and Papain (Carica papaya) are both digestive enzymes that help soften tissue and increase blood flow to the joints (Metzig et al. 1999) and speed healing and repair of soft tissues. (Blonstein 1960; Heinike et al 1972; Klaue et al. 1979) Oleanic acid and Rutin are antioxidants that provide cellular support to the joints. (Funabiki et al. 1999)
